Aims & Scope
The Journal of Humanity’s Future in the Cosmos is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing research that informs and shapes the long-term survival, development, and flourishing of intelligent life—on Earth and beyond. Inspired by the profound question of how humanity can avoid existential risks and become a lasting cosmic presence, the journal provides a platform for visionary but rigorous scholarship across scientific, technological, philosophical, and policy domains.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, perspectives, and case studies in (but not limited to) the following areas:
1. Astrobiology and Exoplanetary Science: studies on the origins of life, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, planetary habitability, and biosignature detection
2. Space Exploration and Colonization: strategies and technologies for human survival on the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies; sustainable life-support systems; long-duration space mission science
3. Existential Risk and Civilizational Resilience: modeling and mitigation of catastrophic risks including nuclear war, AI misalignment, pandemics, and climate tipping points
4. Planetary Defense and Cosmic Hazards: detection and mitigation of asteroid impacts, supervolcanoes, solar flares, and other space-related threats
5. Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: the future of intelligent systems, AI governance, synthetic consciousness, and their role in sustaining or threatening human futures
6. Climate Science and Earth System Sustainability: studies that link Earth’s future stability with planetary-scale feedbacks, technological adaptation, and climate foresight
Futures Studies and Long-Term Thinking: scenario modeling, deep-time forecasting, interstellar messaging, cultural continuity, and philosophical explorations of humanity’s role in the universe
The journal aims to foster dialogue across disciplines and engage with scholars, scientists, technologists, and thought leaders who are working to illuminate the pathways through which humanity might thrive across cosmic timescales. Articles are expected to be grounded in evidence and scientific reasoning, while also embracing the speculative foresight necessary for shaping our collective future.
